Going Nuts Over Snack Time

An article in yesterday's Washington Post caught our eye: "Potatoes Bad, Nuts Good For Staying Slim, Harvard Study Finds," which highlighted why the age old mantra of "Eat everything in moderation and just reduce total calories" really is not the golden ticket to maintaining a healthy diet and an ideal weight.

The piece cites a study done by Harvard School of Public Health, which detailed why some people were still gaining weight over a several year period even though they following the "same calories in -- same calories out" rule. According to Dariush Mozaffarian, of the Harvard School of Public Health, "All foods are not equal, and just eating in moderation is not enough."

As parents of kids with Type 1 Diabetes, we nodded in agreement, knowing too well that those foods cited by the study as contributors to weight gain -- potatoes and foods with refined grains -- are the very same ones guilty of spiking BG numbers in our kids.

The study did find that natural, back-to-basics foods were best in controlling and even reducing weight gain because these foods did not cause BG and insulin surges and therefore made people feel more satisfied and therefore resulting in them eating less.

The three best food types the resulted in reduced weight gain (and BG spikes):

1. Yogurt -- We'd mentioned a few months ago Dannon's Light and Fit Yogurt with 3 grams of carbs).

2. Nuts -- Low/no-salt please. For example, 1 ounce of almonds has 6 grams of carbs.

3. Fruits and Vegetables -- Do watch the carb counts in each, which can vary substantially based on the size and weight of each choice).

Bottom line: Maybe everyone would be better off if they just followed the same diets that our kids need to follow to stay healthy.
